Snorkeling in Phuket

During the months of November to April, the Andaman Sea is crystal clear and the waters are calm giving visitors to the island the perfect opportunity to explore Phuket’s underwater world. One of the most enjoyable activities to try while holidaying in Phuket is snorkeling. While staying at Kata Ocean View Residences, we highly recommend you take the opportunity to go snorkeling in Phuket.

Phuket’s best snorkeling spots

Not all of Phuket’s beaches offer up great snorkeling, but the ones that do are absolutely phenomenal. While snorkeling in and around Phuket’s waters, chances are you will see a lot of starfish, sea cucumbers, loads of fish varieties as well as the occasional dolphin or large, swift sea turtle.

In the southern part of the island, Ya Nui and Ao Sane beaches are great for snorkeling. Both of these small beaches are home to tiny coves and rock formations, making them perfect for underwater exploration.

The home base beaches of Kata Ocean View Residences, Kata Beach and Kata Noi Beach are great at the north end, as the rocks there shelter quite a bit of marine life. Expect to see many different types of fish and the occasional sea snake and big crabs.

Beaches further north up Phuket’s western coast, including Laem Singh, Freedom Beach and Paradise Beach (the latter two being quite close to Patong) are great for snorkeling as they have rock formations and shallow reefs just offshore. Lots of interesting sea creatures tend to hang out near the coral reefs.

Naithon Beach up near the Phuket International Airport is also a great beach to do a bit of snorkeling. Nature is rife up near this beach, and the southern end of the beach harbours a lot of varieties of marine life.

Snorkeling gear in Phuket

Many of the shops that line Phuket’s various beaches sell snorkeling gear including masks and fins. Often times, gear can be rented on the beach but it’s important to note that a deposit will need to be paid in order to do so. Once the gear is returned at the end of the allocated time, so is the deposit. If you are looking for high end, durable snorkeling gear it is best to pop into any of the dive shops and take a look.
